🦵 5 Signs You May Have an ACL Tear

An ACL injury can happen during sports, a sudden twist, awkward landing, or even a fall. Sometimes the symptoms are immediate, while in other cases they may become noticeable over time.

Watch for these common signs:

1️⃣ A sudden “pop” — You may hear or feel a popping sensation when the injury occurs.

2️⃣ Rapid swelling — Knee swelling can develop within a few hours after the injury.

3️⃣ Pain & restricted movement — Bending or straightening the knee may become difficult.

4️⃣ Knee instability — Your knee may feel like it is “giving way, ” especially while walking or changing direction.

5️⃣ Difficulty twisting or pivoting — Running, jumping, turning or cutting movements may feel painful or unstable.

⚠️ Important: These symptoms can occur with other knee injuries too. A proper orthopedic examination and appropriate imaging may be needed to determine whether the ACL is torn and whether other structures, such as the meniscus, are also injured.

If your knee feels unstable after an injury, don’t ignore it.
